Berlin Snowflake

This snowflake pattern is from Adelheid Dangela, author of Occhi-Patchwork. I finished it this afternoon and haven't yet pressed or stiffened it. I made it with size 20 thread and the finished size is just over 3". When I make it again, I'll use a smaller thread which will make the snowflake smaller and not as heavy looking. 

Another tatted motif

The pattern source for this is Forty Original  Designs in Tatting  by Nellie Hall Youngburg. This pattern is Blue Bird #28.

Patterns from this book have been rewritten and are being studied by the Online Tatting Class.  

I changed the color to better represent a cardinal which is my state bird and also mascot for local university Ball State. 

I used size 12 Oren Bayan perle cotton color # 191. 

Antique Pattern

This week the Tatting Newsletter from BellaOnline.com had directions for an antique pattern from Anna Valeire Book #3. The directions were updated to make it possible to make the entire motif without tying off when partially done. This is done with self-closing mock rings (SCMR). 

The picture shows 2 that I made last eve. It's been awhile since I'd done a SCMR and had to start over when doing my first one. After that, the tatting went smoothly. I added seed beads to the open picots on the 2nd motif. Both of these were made with DMC Cebelia size 20 thread. These motifs measure 2" across. I'm going to use these as snowflakes but these would make cute earrings if made with a smaller thread. 

Wheel of Nine Rings

This cute motif is made with Altin Basak size 50 thread. The pattern is found in Monica Hahn's Christmas Angels and Other Tatting Patterns.  

I'm going to keep this and the violet edging #7 sample  to use for appliquing to a quilt or other object. 

Another Youngburg motif

This motif by Nellie Hall Youngburg is Violet Edging #7. This was tatted with 4 strands of 12 ply silk embroidery floss. This was sometimes a challenge to tat with because there were 4 strands to pick up when doing joins. The pattern, however, was not a problem. For the stem and leaves I used some green I already had on a shuttle which was a green Flora size 50. I'd like to try this again with thread I prefer. By using a smaller size thread for the leaves and stem, the lace tends to curve. I'm thinking that by making several more flowers with stems and leaves, the edging may make a circle much like a little wreath. Someday perhaps I'll try that. 

Tatted Wild Rose Medallion

The Online Tatting Class had been studying 40 Original Designs in Tatting by Nellie Hall Youngburg @ 1921. I haven't been able to participate in class due to other priorities and my family situation but I've enjoyed following along and viewing the projects. Yesterday I picked up a thread and shuttle with thread already on it and tatted this motif which is motif #26. The thread is Flora size 20. I like the way the inner chains form a star like shape and the outer rings remind me of little hearts. This finished motif measures 2.5". 

More Earrings!

This set is earrings and a pendant I'll hand on a silver chain. This set is for me and I'll enjoy them!

I've had the beads for quite awhile but didn't know for sure what I'd do with them. They have a hand painted look to them and I thought they were pretty unique. The beads are about an inch in size. Last night I decided to use them for earrings and a pendant. I used a variegated blue thread size 8 perle cotton and teal colored glass seed beads which I put on each picot. 

The pattern I used was one I had on my iPad and is by Nancy Price.  It is titled "Instructions for Blue and White Tatted Earrings". 

Tatted Flower Earrings and Bracelet Set

I already had these little flowers made. I modeled the beaded earrings after directions by Julie Patterson. After I had the earrings done, I decided to also make a bracelet. I used the same colored beads strung on elastic cord and added another little flower. These will be a gift. I think the recipient will enjoy wearing them.  

Easter Eggs, Easter Eggs

I have completed 3 more Easter eggs, decorated with tatting and beads. These went pretty quickly as I used little butterfies, small bits of trim and flowers that I already had made. What a nice way to use those practice pieces and small bits made from what is left on a shuttle when a project is finished. 

This egg has 6 small butterflies on it with a small circle of tatting at the top and a snowflake shape at the bottom. 

This egg has the same circle of hearts flower on the front and back and a strip of edging around the side. Here's a picture of the edging. 

The next one has edging around it with a flower on each side but the flowers are a bit different. 

On each of these, I put the beads on a small straight pin and inserted the pin through a picot or in the center of ring, using just enough to hold the tatting into the egg. To keep my finger from getting sore I tried a rubber jar opener but found that too big and awkward. I then tried pushing the pins in with a small plastic bottle cap. That worked well. The cap went into my container of beads and pins so it'll remind me to use it instead of my finger.

Tatting on an Easter Egg

I completed and attached the tatting to this Easter egg today. The egg color is close  but the tatting around the center is a variegated light blue though the photo doesn't show that. For the caps I used the following edging:

R5-5-5-5. RW.  *Ch 3-3-3-3. RW.  R5+5-5-5. RW. Ch 3-3(R 3-3-3-3)3-3. RW R5+5-5-5. RW. 

Repeat from * until desired length connecting last ring to first ring. 

The center is an edging from Tatted Doilies & Edgings edited by Rita Weiss page 32 #3. I was able to tat this edging in one piece by using 2 shuttles of thread and using the technique of split rings. 

For the tatting on this egg I used #70 tatting thread - variegated blue and white. 

This is the first egg I've decorated with tatting. Now I want to do some more. 

Tatted Cross

This is a small cross bookmark that I made for a friend. It is made with 2 size 70 tatting threads: variegated green and white.

I visited the site but didn't locate a pattern so I guessed at the number of stitches per ring and made my own. 

Hanky with tatted edging

What a nice surprise when I opened my last issue of the Helping Hands Newsletter. The envelope not only contained the newsletter but a pastel green handkerchief. Just right for some spring tatting. For the  edging I used edging #8902 on page 78 of The Tatter's Treasure Chest and size 30 Clark's  thread. I bought this vintage thread from my quilt guild's cash & carry table this month. It is vintage thread, I think. It was a big ball and had a printed price of 45 cents on it. Some of this ball had been used and all during my project I kept hoping that it would last to the end of the project. It did!  There are just a few yards of thread left. I plan to use this hanky to line a small basket and put some Easter eggs in it. 

Tatted Earrings

2 pair of earrings that I tatted and sent to my granddaughter. Just in time for Valentine's Day and St Patrick's Day.  

Both are made with #70 tatting cotton and seed beads. The shamrocks are made from a pattern published 3/9/12 at:

The hearts are from a pattern I had from designer Christina Banyard. I added beads to all the picots and between every 2 stitches of the center ring. The exception was putting 3 beads on the picot at the bottom of the heart. 

Christmas is coming!

I know that Christmas months away but if I don't get started now, I'll be rushed to get done the things I want to make.

This is an ornament consisting of tatted lace made from size 40 Lizbeth thread, color 147 and attached to a styrofoam ball with beads on tiny straight pins that went through the picots. The pattern is:

Needle Tatting with Style Book 1 by Barbara Foster, published by Handy Hands Tatting. Though the patterns here are written for needle tatters, they work for shuttle tatters as well. Since my thread was smaller than the #10 the pattern calls for, I used a ball smaller than  3" designated by the pattern. . Mine is approx. 2" in diameter. 

I'll be making several of these to use as gifts. 

Occasional Doily

This doily has been in progress for awhile. This past week I came across it and realized it had part of the last row done so with only a partial row to finish, I completed it. It's a UFO no longer. 

The thread used is Lizbeth size 20, color #122. The pattern is on page 13 of Tatting Doilies & Edgings, edited by Rita Weiss ( Dover Needlework Series). 

Tatted Bookmark

This little bookmark was made from thread I already had on shuttles, the thread left from previous projects.  I used the thread for the bookmark, using the Bookmark pattern by Kendra Goodnow in the Spring/Summer 2015 issue of Helping Hands Newsletter (website:  hhtatting.com).

The above bookmark is an adaption in that it is longer than the pattern calls for as I was using tatting cotton # 70 or 80 and I added the split ring cord and the flower at the end. This will at some point in the future be tucked into a greeting card. 

Doily - Design #8158

Using size 20 Lizbeth thread, colors 125 and 661, I tatted this doily, design #8158 from Imported Designs of Tatting #77 copyright 1936. The pattern can be found at:

Anniversary Heart

Friends Dave and Pam are celebrating 50 years of marriage. I'll tuck into their card this little heart that I tatted with 50 gold beads and #30 Clark's ONT thread I have. 

The pattern is Small Tatted Heart by Betsy Evans (1998). It's my favorite for when I want to add 50 beads. The pattern is located at:

Tarted Bookmarks

I've completed 2 bookmarks made from patterns in a Handy Hands catalog. Their website is:

For these bookmarks I used 2 threads. The rings are a Valdani #12 pearl cotton , color 0544 and the chains are Lizbeth #20, color 124. I'll keep these bookmarks to tuck into a greeting card sometime. 

Motif 8150

Here is motif 8150 from the Imported Designs of Tatting Book #77. It is tatted with Lizbeth size 40 thread, color 147. 

Finished size is 3.75 inches.
